“BLONDIE’S NEW YORK AND THE MAKING OF PARALLEL LINES” TX Friday 21st March 2014. REVIEWS/PREVIEWS.

March 24, 2014

Be sure to make time for Blondie's New York tomorrow. I've seen the special and was surprised by how much I didn't know. (For instance, how have I missed the "rat food" lyric in One Way or Another all these years?) It's particularly entertaining to listen to the original multitrack tapes — and see band members hear them for the first time in years. While it gave me chills to hear Harry's original vocals without any of the instrumentation, she seems a little horrified by them. USA TODAY

Woven into this (documentary) is some valuable hindsight about image, particularly as it concerned the trendsetting look and moves of Blondie’s lead singer, Debbie Harry, and how audiences — and the music industry — responded to her. The members of Blondie knew this album (Parallel Lines) would finally ostracize them from their punk peers, especially once people heard the perfectly disco-fied, ingeniously layered, surefire hit single “Heart of Glass.” The song is still huge. “Every band in that little [CBGB] world, regardless of what they say — they all wanted a big hit,” says keyboardist Jimmy Destri. Selling out never sounded sweeter. WASHINGTON POST

Narrated by Kim Cattrall, Blondie’s New York features some great music and even greater interviews with Harry, Stein, and the rest of the band. BLOGCRITICS

You’ll learn the story behind songs like “One Way or Another” and “Pretty Baby,” and hear the band talk about their creative process. It’s equally interesting whether Blondie is new to you or your favorite band, and also a good reminder what New York was like before it got Disneyfied. PLAYBACK
